Winter Patterns -Handwriting, Reading and Math

Resource Type:

Winter Patterns  Download the pages of this reproducible book and then copy it double-sided to make individual books for your students.  Children are encouraged to think about patterns in everyday winter items, how patterns repeat or are symmetrical.  Brainstorm ways to create different patterns for the same item, a scarf, a mitten or a hat by using geometric shapes, colors, lines (zigzag, wavy, thin, thick) etc. Have children look for patterns in nature and in the classroom.  Make patterns in math with beads, blocks, tiles, and other manipulatives.  Children trace the dotted lines written underneath each pattern page and then write the words themselves below.  Have the children read the pages aloud in pairs after reading them as a class.  This little book provides practice for handwriting, patterning, and reading.  Sharing the book at home provides children with a chance to share all that they have learned with family.  Pages may also be used singly as activities for independent work at centers or for enrichment when other work is finished.
